a noob working the ruby railroad.

some quick seo notes.

newsvine is an instant google index, got my site submitted to over 80 social bookmarking sites so i will see how that changes traffic. if it doesnt work out, ill know now that building traffic, no way around it, has to be done organically, slowly, and only to reputable sites. shucks.,

moving onto next phase of learning, SEO.

ive been reading alot lately about seo and other funny gimmicks and such. ive read that some folks had to wait upto 6 months before their site showed up in google’s search. well, im not really sure what they did, but all of my sites are in googles index within a week or 2 weeks the most…so if you just recently launched a site, be patient, fill your site with good content, and call it a day. maybe what happens is that people try to spam their site all over who knows where and google just plants that site in what they call a ‘sandbox’. its late, im off too sleep…..

greetings all, come visit my new sites

hello all,

im back again with 2 more sites i programmed using Ruby on Rails. They are pretty much the same in terms of functionality, but in 2 different topics. The first one is titled H2daily.net. This site is basically a posting site where users can post, rate, and leave comments. The theme is hiphop, so I hope to fill it up with all real hiphop songs from the 90’s, bboy battles, graf and art photos, and dj information.

the second site revolves around celebrities such as movie, tv, sport, and model stars. check it out at hollastar.com.

the site took me about 2 weeks of part time development. I spent maybe an hour a day or so. i am still incorporating additional functionality like a messaging system, and a better rating system based off of votes as suppose to stars which will help filter out spammers and keep the best relevant links at the top of the heap. i think i have it all planned out, so more testing for me.

so check it out!

conditional validation in rails.....awesome.

July 16th, 2007

came across a little challenge the other day about how to validate a field in a form. basically i have a link field that should be validated to make sure that there are no spaces and that it contains http:// in the address. of course this can be easily done by doing validates_presence of and a validates format of by matching the string. however, how about when you link could be a embedded video from youtube or some other video sharing site? easy, skip the validation by doing a condition like so:

cant remember off hand but something like this

validates_presence of :link, if => :check_link?

def check_ling? return true if whatever here…. end

for more info check out http://railscasts.com/episodes/41

my next site is almost ready

i am far from a designer, and would save plenty of time splitting up the work 50/50. whatever profits we get, split down the line. what you say? drop me a message.
